Explaining The SSD Application Process

Applying for SSD benefits typically involves many complex steps.  First, you must file your initial Social Security Disability application with the Social Security Administration (SSA).

You can start this application online at the Social Security website or by calling your local Social Security office to set up an appointment.

To be eligible for SSD benefits, you must be able to show a medical condition that prevents you from working and you have worked enough in the past to qualify for SSDI.  This is an injury expecting to last at least a year or has resulted in death.  In order to prove you meet these requirements, you will likely provide certain information and evidence when filing your application including:

  • Medical records from all of your doctors, hospitals, clinics and treatment facilities
  • Names, addresses and phone numbers of all of your doctors, hospitals, clinics and treatment facilities, as well as the dates of your visits
  • Names and dosages of any medications your may be taking
  • Lab and test results
  • Detailed summary of your work history
  • Copies of your recent W-2s
  • Social Security number
  • Birth certificate

Following the filing of your application, the Social Security office will initially determine whether you meet certain necessary criteria.  If you do, your application will be forwarded to the Disability Determination Services department for a complete review.  This process can take several months.

You will be notified once a determination is made regarding your application.  Do not be surprised if your claim is denied since most claims are at first.  Thankfully, you still have options available, including appealing the decision.

Keep in mind, however, this information barely scratches the surface of what you need to know when applying for SSD benefits.  It is always best to seek the legal counseling of an experienced attorney in order to avoid costly mistakes.
